

The 4 stringers have a very thin feel, the 5 stringers often have an assymetrical neck that doesn't work for everyone. Used Tobias Basic 5 string, late 80s, Pre-Gibson serial 1011, neck-thru, gloss black, rare hard to find, immaculate, beautiful stable maple/purpleheart/maple neck, maple body wings, low action, full original Bartolini pickups and preamp, Vol / Vol / treble / mid /bass, active-passive switch, stunning instrument to play, huge low end that’s tight and defined, sweet mids, glassy highs. If you can, get your hands on it before you buy - you want to pay attention to the neck shape. Check out reviews at Harmony Central and and you will find stories to the contrary, but I have had no problems with pots, connections, components. Out of the box I had to do some pickup height adjusting, I even replaced foam rubber padding under the strings with springs to lift them a bit.

This has the Thick Wenge tone plate and a Flame maple top on Walnut body with 5 pc Maple and Purple Heart neck-through. Plays and sounds great with great fretts and neck. From my perspective these are great bang-for-the-buck basses. I own a Toby Deluxe 4 (bolt-on) the very cheapest of the MIK Tobias basses.
